ECS Magnets: Permanent Magnets Selection Guidelines

Selecting the Right Magnet Material

To determine which kind of permanent magnet material is right for you requires knowledge of:

•  the magnetic specifications and operating environment of your application.
•  the magnetic specifications and operating environment of your application.
•  the size, shape and any special requirements related to the magnet’s physical dimensions or mechanical properties.
•  the price you are willing to pay to achieve various levels of magnetic performance, given that different magnet materials may work for the same application.

If, after considering the information below, you are still uncertain which permanent magnet type is best suited for your application, or if you have questions about any of our magnet products, please do not hesitate to contact us for additional assistance.

Simple Guidelines

Please choose one of the available magnetic material types listed below to view and download more detailed information that will help you select the specific grade most suitable for your application.

Polymer Bonded Magnets

If you want to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that polymer bonded magnets offer in terms of shape-forming capabilities, reduced assembly costs, flexibility in magnetic orientation, a wide range of magnetic performance, and suitability for use in different operating conditions, then you can choose from the following bonded magnet options:

•  When the highest level of magnetic flux density is needed from a bonded magnet and when you can make use of simple shapes like rings, discs or cylinders, then Neomag C (Compression Molded NdFeB) is preferred.
•  When complex shaping capabilities are more important, or when there are opportunities to reduce assembly costs using insert or overmolding techniques, then Neomag I (Injection Molded NdFeB) is the best choice.
•  In cases where the advantages of an injection molded solution are desired, but cost is more important than magnetic performance (i.e. size and weight considerations are not critical), then Koerox I (Injected Molded Ferrite) should be considered.
•  If only slightly better magnetic performance is needed compared to what is attainable using ferrite alone, and cost is still a major limitation, then Koerox HI (Hybrid Injection Molded Ferrite/NdFeB) magnets may be the right solution.

Sintered NdFeB Magnets

If you need the highest energy density available from a permanent magnet material, and you seek the best value in terms of ”flux per unit of cost”, then Neomag S (Sintered NdFeB) is the best choice.

Sintered AlNiCo Magnets

In cases where superior temperature stability of magnetic properties is required, especially at elevated operating temperatures, and when size and weight considerations are not critical, then Koerzit S (Sintered AlNiCo) is the best choice.

Sintered Ferrite Magnets

If you need relatively low recoil permeability, resulting in highly resistant to an external magnetic fields and low costs, Koerox S (Sintered Ferrite is a good choice. Made from iron oxide, SrCO3, (or BaCO3) and other additives. Widely used in motors, generators, electroacoustics, separators, holding system, telecommunication system and etc.

Sintered SmCo Magnets

If you need high specific energy and exceptional resistance to demagnetization in the presence of opposing field, with good remanence and temperature coefficient, Koermax S (Sintered SmCo) is a good choice. Made from Cobalt and rare earth, is a high performance permanent magnet. It has very strong uniaxial magnetic anisotropy originating from crystalline structure. It’s widely used in motors, watch, transducers, instruments, positional detector, generators, radar and etc.
